Thought to have originated in Herefordshire, the Ryeland sheep takes its name from the area in which Rye was grown within the UK and is therefore thought to be one of the oldest of UK breeds. With its stocky build, Ryelands were originally bred for meat and are still great animals for the small holder. However, in recent times the breed has become very rare.

Ryeland fleece is light and bouncy, making it ideal for spinning and felting; especially for harder wearing items. It is a joy to handle and is sold now to champion breed popularity.
