Thought to have orginally been bred by the Vikings, the Gotland is a Northern Short Tailed Sheep, similar to Shetland and Icelandic breeds. They fleece is wonderfully lustrous and comes in a wide range of steely greys and silvers. The wool fibre is extremely warming and will spin and felt in to the most wonderful products, including slippers, jumpers and cushions.

The Fleece has a traditional wash, meaning that the fleece is clean before shearing and has some of the natural 'grease' remaining. This is Ideal for Felting or Spinning. Do make a note of the beautiful curls when you use this wonderful fleece, as it will make the most amazing texture!

Colour: NATURAL GREY with flecks of white and moorit (brown) shades. This varies from sheep to sheep.

Count: averages 50-56 Bradford (28-33 microns) but can be as fine as Merino in places.

Lambs fleece – Staple: 10-12.5cm (4-5 inches). This is a first shearing and is very soft.

Yearling Fleece – Staple: usually 7cm (3 inches). This fleece is a yearling cut, so is shorter than the Lamb’s shearling due to the short time between clips.

Ewes Fleece – Staple: 10-12.5cm (4-5 inches), although can vary. This is the clip a few months before the Ewes give birth. This is the best of the year round growth and although is naturally coarser than the yearling and lamb, it is of a high quality because the nutrients feed to the growing baby lamb have not had an effect on the grown fleece.
